	support older toolsets
	5.1.8 doesn't support -m32 and -fno-reorder-blocks
	probe the m3cg error message to for a complaint about them
	
	convert lingering tabs to spaces
	
	try_exec works here so don't use the PPC_LINUX workaround
	
	path() is seemingly not always available so leave
	a spot for a workaround
