	be sure to merge stderr with stdout to avoid possible hangs
	use comma to divide gcc/ld response file parameters
	This tends not to matter because it only matters for short command lines
	add in some good sounding link switches for gcc
	hey, this makes the previous less likely to matter
	upgrade from 486 to 686, Pentium Pro came out something like 10+ years ago,
	Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Core, Core 2, are all at least "686"
	not that I have looked into details of what gcc does with this, if the
	code runs on 386 at all, etc.
