	allow either of two directory orders, given two files
	note that there are other tests with three outputs that expect
	only one particular order; they appear fragile
	
	build output is in BUILD_DIR, not TARGET, usually the same
	
	executables can be writable, so make our own read only file
	
	use different output files (x and y) for a test that needs further
	debugging on NT386GNU
	
	tests pass on PPC_DARWIN with these changes whereas the
	directory order one was failing; the other changes
	are related to failures on NT386GNU
