Log message:
	- do change runs of slashes to single slashes, except at start
	That way, LIB_INSTALL won't have installroot//lib and Unresolve should work,
	fixing NT386 build.
	- make sure a/ and ab/ canonicalize consistently, to a and ab;
	previously this wasn't true, the trailing slash would be left
	on a/, with the intent of avoiding altering leading slashes
