Log message:
	rename the lock "cm" to "giant"
	I believe it a broad, albeit maybe briefly held, lock that
	is needed because condition variables are difficult to
	implement well on Win32 (prior to Vista, upon which they are they are trivial)
	either way, "cm" is not a great name
