Log message:
	adapt for ALPHA_OSF
	The printed value is not the "controlled" value, and is only
	in the vague vicinity of another possible one -- the calling
	function..a little worrisome, might want to revisit,
	but this doesn't really have to work, it is just for printing
	where crashes occured and on some platforms we just
	return NULL.
