I'm not sure I agree, and other than sorting out my own use forward slashes in config files and Python, I believe you can bootstrap from 5.1.3a. If this is "all" it takes (plus the various other fairly small hacks), I think it is probably worthwhile.
I did build a bunch of the current system with 5.1.3a just now but then I messed up. I had accidentally deleted a bunch of backups (or copied a broken compiler over them).

I thought we decided these hacks were not necessary moving forward.
If you want to build CM3 you need an up to date compiler... etc.
