Log message:
	enable much of what configure -enable-checking would enable, without
	actually having to use configure -enable-checking
	
	Notable exceptions:
	- tree types -- that involves I imagine making macros call functions
	- a specific check involving static links, that fails
	- other expensive checks like aggressive gc, valgrind, etc.
