If I ever saw an understatement here - then this is one :-)

To make long story even shorter - what CM3 tried to do with their
WIDECHAR bussiness and extra-fast concatenations was obsoleted very fast
after (and some of it before) they put all that hell of code in their
codebase.

Whatever they thought to do - UTF-8 is doing with simple byte arrays,
and string operations like array move are fastest non-trivial operations
on CPUs since Z80.

I hope we will see some end of it in times future.
