Not sure if this is related, but "xv" does exactly this for me when
running under VNC, at least with certain combinations of color depths.
No Modula-3 involved.  This is when I am accessing a FreeBSD VNC server
remotely from RealVNC on win2k as well as win XP.  Never quite figured
out why it happens.
