Bad style to answer my own posts, but I've already found it. The X
libraries are missing:

  -> archiving libm3ui.a
ld: fatal: library -lXaw: not found
ld: fatal: library -lXmu: not found
ld: fatal: library -lXext: not found
ld: fatal: library -lXt: not found
ld: fatal: library -lX11: not found
ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to libm3ui.so.5
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
   make_lib => 1

Jay, did you remove the X installation?
