The tide comes and goes. The DEC SRC people were very frustrated with
the C-generating M3 compiler long ago, and invested large efforts to
build the gcc backend ;-) I think I remember that Bill Kalsow, who wrote
much of the original compiler code, said that "C was a very mediocre choice
as an intermediate language". (It may have been somebody else who said
this though.)

Yes, I think we should not unnecessarily remove this.
