FWIW, I am traveling and using a webmail that is different from my usual email
client.  I did find and change a preference setting that sounded like it might
switch to plain text.

So you got it as plaintext.  Interesting.

My email reader operates on a text-only terminal.

I got a two-part message.  The first was HTML, starting with <DIV> and 
ending with </DIV>, though I could cozy it into a  browser and read it 
properly.

The second part was the mailing list's signature.

And that was all.
