  There are situations wheere you need to recognize multiple ways of 
representing newline without normalizing them.

  If you are writing an editor for text that is under revision control, 
and you standardize newlines on input, and then write it out in any 
consistent convention, you run the risk that revision control will think 
that huge numbers of lines have been changed.  Of course, they have 
been, but not intentionally.
