I'm able to reliably reproduce the problem with this command:

/usr/local/cm3/bin/cvsup -g -L 2 cvsupfile.cm3

where the cvsupfile contains:

*default host=birch.elego.de
*default base=/home/mand/tmp/cvsup
*default prefix=/home/mand/tmp/cvs
*default release=cvs
*default delete use-rel-suffix
*default preserve
cm3

Sometimes the first sync will finish, but a subsequent sync will hang.
