Of course the binary distribution came from another machine and was
several years old and had a different setup than my current computer.

However, I think I had enough of an idea what was going on finally,
and with much tweaking and manual intervention I was able to do a 
complete bootstrap. I've compiled all the packages now, and
the demo programs I tried worked as expected (fisheye, Solitaire).

Trying the C backend would have been my next attempt ;-)

If anybody is interested in a copy of the installed system I can try
to upload that somewhere in the next week. I'm not sure if there is
currently a repository for packages or installation archives different
from the old one on the M3 (elego) web site, which contains only
packages several years old.
